In 1990, Terry Thoren organized a 50 year celebratory tribute to Tex Avery, he contacted 16 animators from around the world and helped them "kickstart" a short film giving their individual take on the genius of Avery. As I recall only 3 films were ever finished. Working out of the basement of Gav’s Minneapolis home, Gavrilo Gnatovich along with the remarkably talented Todd Myers produced the animated short, "Pre-Hysterical Daze", an abstract compilation of Tex Avery gags in a prehistoric setting. “Pre-Hysterical Daze” toured with Terry Thoren’s “The Fourth Animation Celebration” and got the attention of some TV developers out their in the “real” world.
“Longhair and Doubledome” began development soon after completing “Daze”, but was a very different project than initially planned. The first iteration of “Longhair and Doubledome” was to be a dark caveman comedy and the designs for each of the characters were far from where they ended up for the Cartoon Network pilot. I will try to dig up some of those designs from the archive.
I will tell much more of the story when I do, I might still have some of the script or storyboard but for now here is “Pre-Hysterical Daze”.
